Chip Tolentino - A confident, social boy scout and the champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. (C4 -B5)
Logainne Schwartzandgrubeniere – The youngest and most politically aware speller. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win and make her two fathers proud. She speaks with a lisp. (A3 -F5)
Leaf Coneybear - The second runner-up in his district, Leaf is thrust in the competition. He is easily distracted and finds everything about the bee amazing and amusing. (A3 -A5)
William Barfee - A finalist last year, he is back for vindication. He has a famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling, only one working nostril, and a prickly personality. (E4 -B5)
Marcy Park – A National Bee competitor last year, Marcy is the ultimate over-achiever. She expects perfection of herself at the expense of everything else. She has many talents. (C4 -E5)
Olive Ostrovsky - A kind and shy newcomer to the Bee. Her parents’ personal issues and travel have left her lonely, but hopeful. She has befriended the dictionary. (B3 -F5)
Rona Lisa Peretti - The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion, and the returning moderator. She loves the Bee. (B3 -F5)
Douglas Panch - The Vice Principal. They won’t let him be Principal after an incident five years ago… but they have let him return to the Bee.
Mitch Mahoney - The Bee’s Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing community service with the Bee, handing out juice boxes and consolation; and forming trusted relationships with the competitors. (E4 -A5)
Carl’s Dad - Logainne‘s primary Spelling Bee trainer. A competitive father who prioritizes winning. (G3 -D5)
Dan’s Dad - Logainne‘s more laid back father. He uses warmer tactics, but winning is still important. (G3 -D5)
